An update was made on Saturday, October 25, 2025, with new Canadian snowbird information and the latest data from Statistics Canada related to U.S. and Canada travel
The travel trends to the United States might be changing as far as Air Canada is concerned. A couple of months ago, Air Canada caught Canadians off guard by canceling winter flights to warm Florida destinations like Jacksonville. However, the times might be changing.
Air Canada is surprising passengers with new “first-ever” routes to the United States. A first-ever flight between San Antonio and Toronto is set for May 2026. The airline also added flights to Cleveland and Columbus.
It remains to be seen if the travel trend toward the United States will shift. For now, what we do know is that Air Canada confirmed that the booking behavior among Canadians for travel to the U.S. has changed.
Air Canada Passengers Are Making Last-Minute Decisions For Travel To The United States
Travel trends to the United States dipped significantly throughout 2025. The trends were flipped entirely upside down, and the same holds for how Canadians book U.S. travel.
Industry experts from Canada and the United States recently sat down during a panel conversation titled “State of the Industry.” The panel included Viktor Spysak, Manager, Sales and Tourism Partnerships for Air Canada.
In a transcript of the panel discussion provided by Travel Week, Spysak noted that a couple of different trends are taking place.
First, the leisure market is performing better than non-leisure related to U.S. travel for Air Canada. However, the biggest new trend, according to Spysak, is that Canadians who are booking for the United States are making the decision at the last-minute, reducing the booking window.
The Air Canada rep revealed during the panel conversation, “Our booking window has reduced, which suggests that a lot of travellers are making last-minute decisions.”
Despite the change in mentality and decrease, Spysak refused to call the changes “dramatic” and believes the lower number still meets existing demands. The Air Canada Manager revealed that the airline is slowly starting to boost its marketing for travel to the U.S.
Air Canada Is “Cautiously” Restarting Marketing Campaigns For Travel To The U.S.
Spysak went on to reveal that Air Canada is “cautiously restarting” marketing for U.S. destinations. Spysak revealed, “We donʻt do it as a hard sell, but rather to remind our audience and our travelers of the routes and the destinations that we serve.”
Air Canada is enticing U.S. travelers in different ways. They have added three new destinations for next summer, including seasonal routes to Columbus, Cleveland, and San Antonio.
Air Canada has added these flights due to “positive signs and growing demand for certain destinations.”
Additionally, the airline is enticing Americans with a generous perk. Air Canada became the only airline in all of North America to serve free alcohol on all economy flights.
Vice President of loyalty and product, Scott O’Leary, believes this can strengthen the bond between Air Canada and its American passengers.
“Our ability to offer a degree of differentiation that sets us apart from literally every other airline that we’re competing with on those routes was very important to us,” O’Leary said.
The new perk will aid “sixth freedom flights,” linking Americans to other international destinations like Asia and Europe. The hospitality of the connecting flight is a major key for Air Canada as far as its U.S. travelers are concerned.
Despite The Efforts, Travel To The United States From Canada Is Still A “Mixed Bag”
Despite the best efforts, the trajectory is still unclear. Canadian snowbirds remain a crucial part of Air Canada’s travel. At the moment, the trend of snowbirds is going in two different ways. Some are avoiding the U.S., while others are enthusiastic about a return.
“This year itʻs really a mixed bag. Weʻre hearing from some snowbirds that are adamant that they wonʻt go to the U.S. under the current environment. Others are saying that theyʻre reluctantly going to go back, and others are enthusiastically returning to the U.S.,” said Snowbird Advisor’s Stephen Fine.

During the panel discussion, Stephen Fine, founder of Snowbird Advisor and Secretary Treasurer, revealed that Canadian snowbirds who are inclined to visit have properties in the U.S.
In addition, some snowbirds have the “life is too short” mentality and have put their political concerns aside. Many Canadian snowbirds are even paying a premium for travel to the U.S., particularly in snowbird states like Florida.
Still, it remains to be seen how the trends will shift toward the end of the year, especially with the holiday season fast approaching.
Canadians Continue To Decrease Travel To The U.S. According To The Latest Numbers
Statistics Canada released end-of-summer data on travel between Canada and the United States for August 2025. In July, a 32.4% drop was seen in Canadians visiting the U.S. compared to the same month last year. This trajectory held in August, as visits among Canadian residents dipped with returning trips from the U.S., down 29.7%.
In total, 2.8 million return trips took place. In a rare turn of events, more American residents returned from trips to Canada in August, totaling 3.2 million.
This is only the third time such a turn has occurred since 2006.
Taking a closer look at the numbers, ground travel decreased by 32.6%, while air travel hit 608,800, a 17% decline compared to last year. Meanwhile, that downward trend continued in September. Statistics Canada’s most recent September 2025 data shows a year-over-year 35% drop in Canadians visiting the U.S. on road trips. There was also a decline of 27% in air travel to the U.S. by Canadians compared to the same month in 2024.
In spite of downward travel trends from Canada to the U.S., airlines like Air Canada are hopeful that the tide will turn toward the end of the year, especially in November, December, and January.
