WestJet published a new guide aimed at debunking persistent airfare myths.
“From the dinner table to the group chat, travel advice is everywhere, but not all of it holds up,” WestJet said in a July 25 blog post.
Debunking the Biggest Airfare Myths
Among the most widespread beliefs WestJet is challenging is the notion that booking on a specific day—typically Tuesday in the early morning—will result in the lowest fares.
According to the airline, “There is no magic day.”
Another persistent myth is that last-minute bookings offer the best value. In reality, WestJet says prices tend to rise as the departure date approaches due to demand.
“Early booking not only ensures savings but also greater choice,” the airline noted.
The blog also addressed technical theories, such as the belief that searching in incognito mode or on a mobile device changes pricing.
“Don’t overcomplicate it,” WestJet said, explaining that fare prices are the same on their website and app regardless of how customers access them.
As for incognito mode, WestJet explained that fluctuating fares are usually the result of sales activity and availability, not tracking individual searches.
The airline dismissed the use of VPNs to spoof location in the hopes of scoring a cheaper fare. “No need to involve IT,” the post read. “WestJet does not change fare prices based on IP addresses.”
What Actually Works
In place of myths, WestJet offered several tips:
- Choose the right fare type: While WestJet’s UltraBasic fare is aimed at price-sensitive travellers, options like EconoFlex offer added flexibility.
- Join WestJet Rewards: Members can earn and redeem points on eligible flights and vacation packages. Those with the WestJet RBC Mastercard receive additional perks like a companion voucher and one free checked bag on eligible fares.
- Travel in the off-season: Flying during off-peak times often means lower airfare and accommodation costs, with the bonus of fewer crowds.
- Stay flexible: Travellers willing to adjust dates or consider alternative airports may find significantly better deals.
- Prepay for checked baggage: Booking luggage online in advance can result in lower fees compared to paying at the airport.
“Forget the myths and focus on planning ahead, staying flexible and join WestJet Rewards—no VPN or 3 a.m. alarm required,” the blog advised.
