Arts, events, entertainment and culture newsletter for Wilmington, NC

Welcome to the weekly Port City Life newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews cultural issues reporter John Staton.

OK, so who’s been to the beach already this year? I don’t typically brave the ocean before May, although my teenage son was out there swimming with his friends in April. Then again, they’ve got young blood.

This weekend isn’t looking ideal for the beach, but I’m thinking that the next hot day when the temps approach 90, the surf and sand will be calling my name.

Anyway, there’s plenty going on this weekend in the Wilmington area besides the beach, so let’s get into it.

Weekend weather outlook

We’ve had a pretty good run of weather up to now, but this weekend might be where it ends. About a 50% chance of thunderstorms Friday before clearing up (and cooling down) a little on Saturday, with more rain likely on the way Sunday. Highs in the mid to upper 70s, lows near 60.

Go | See | Do

Pretty good range of things to do in the Wilmington area this weekend, starting with a variety of live music, from folk (the Local Honeys) and punk (Emergency Nothing) to jazz (Leland Jazz Fest) and classical (N.C. Symphony).

Plus, the Gaspard and Dancers troupe is coming to Thalian Hall, Jengo’s Playhouse hosts the LGBTQ+-themed Silver Pride Film Festival and there’s a couple of cool markets to check out. Full list below.
