Bus service returns to Orangeburg through after recent gap in intercity travel
ORANGEBURG, S.C. (WIS) — Intercity bus service has returned to Orangeburg after a lapse that followed the departure of Southeastern Stages from the market last fall.
FlixBus, a separate brand operated by Flix North America, resumed daily service in Orangeburg on Jan. 1. The bus operates one round trip per day on the Charlotte-to-Orlando route, stopping at the Xpress Travel Center at 1935 Old Edisto Drive.
Greyhound, which is also owned by Flix North America, previously served Orangeburg but ended service in the area several years ago. After Greyhound left, Orangeburg was served by independent carrier Southeastern Stages, which operated out of the Love’s Travel Center. While Southeastern Stages was not owned by Flix North America, its tickets were available for purchase on the company’s website.
Southeastern Stages exited the intercity bus market in October, leaving Orangeburg without intercity bus service until FlixBus resumed operations at the start of the new year.
The absence of service created challenges for residents who rely on bus travel.
“You have to get a bus out of Charleston or Aiken, Augusta,” said Gloria Hutto, an Orangeburg resident.
Willie Green, another Orangeburg resident, said there was “the need to work more for the citizens of Orangeburg.”
Orangeburg County Administrator Harold Young said the loss of service came as a surprise to local officials.
“And so it was just a shock to us that, you know, something wasn’t … that it was just not going to be done anymore,” Young said.
Young said intercity bus service is especially important for students and longtime riders who travel long distances.
“So you got a lot of students who live out of state who mostly use it,” Young said. “And we have local citizens. A lot of our citizens for years have been going back and forth to New York and different places on the bus, you know, religiously for years.”
The Xpress Travel station says there will be stops coming twice a day at 1 pm and 9 pm.
FlixBus says its buses will now operate one daily round trip through Orangeburg as part of its Charlotte-to-Orlando route, restoring a key transportation link for the community after months without service.
