Corrections & clarifications: The Oregon Department of Transportation is not funding this project.

A new seasonal transit option will connect Portland to popular destinations along the Oregon Coast beginning Memorial Day weekend.

On May 23, the North Coast Express bus will provide seasonal transit between Beaverton and Astoria, Seaside, Cannon Beach, Rockaway Beach and the Tillamook Creamery.

Here’s what to know.

What is the North Coast Express bus to Oregon Coast?

The North Coast Express is a new summer bus service that will expand car-free access to the Oregon Coast with a focus on tourism.

“Building on the region’s growing network of car-free travel options, the North Coast Express offers a new, stress-free way to experience the North Coast,” according to a news release. “Riders can enjoy a full day of coastal exploration or plan a longer stay with flexible return-day ticketing.”

Buses will be equipped with free WiFi and charging ports, onboard restrooms, reclining seats and panoramic windows, and wheelchair accessibility. Storage space is limited, but there will be room for bikes, surfboards, coolers and other large items.

The pilot project, led by the Oregon Coast Visitors Association, is funded through ticket sales and by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as well as matching funds from Travel Oregon and the state transient lodging tax.

The Oregon Coast Visitors Association has partnered with Ecoshuttle for the project.

What days will the North Coast Express provide bus service to Oregon Coast?

The service will operate on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays beginning May 23 through the end of August.

Where does the North Coast Express bus to the Oregon Coast depart from?

The morning coastal connection will have two express routes that will depart from the Sunset Transit Center in Beaverton.

The Northbound Express goes to Cannon Beach, Seaside and Astoria.

The Southbound Express goes to Rockaway Beach and the Tillamook Creamery.

Both express routes will return to Beaverton during the evening.

Midday coastal connection service will allow for on and off travel between coastal towns.
