Route 1A reopens after bus topples light poles, transformers

Southbound lanes of Route 1A in East Boston reopened Tuesday afternoon after a bus crashed into a utility pole and brought down three other poles and two transformers. The driver has been cited in connection with the crash, according to Boston police. The bus struck an electrical pole on Route 1A, which is also the William F. McClellan Highway, early Monday morning near Addison Street, and created instant gridlock.Info: Check Traffic Conditions “The bus veered off into the right lane, took out a pole, and unfortunately hit numerous poles, and the poles pulled down other poles. So we had wires all over the street and about four transformers all over the highway — both sides of the highway,” Boston Fire Department Chief Mark Raymond said. The driver, who was not named by police, has been cited with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and failure to stay within marked lanes. Police have also requested that the driver’s license be immediately suspended. The northbound lanes of Route 1A were reopened before the evening commute while utility crews worked overnight to repair broken poles and re-string power lines.”It couldn’t be worse. It’s the worst time of the day. It’s the worst place it could happen — being a Monday is tough, too, so it’s going to be a major problem for the commute,” Raymond said.Several people were on the bus and headed to Logan International Airport at the time of the crash. Two people were taken to a hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.Anthony Carnevale said the crash happened during his early morning commute. “This morning was bad. Then coming home, right over here McClellan, same deal,” Carnevale said. “It happened right after I pulled on the road at like 5:50 a.m. Terrible, the whole northbound was shut down. So I had to go through.”Locals like Megan DeFrance know once you’re on that stretch of road along Route 1A, it’s hard to avoid the gridlock. “I actually had to walk around and I can tell you right now it is severely impacting traffic everywhere,” DeFrance said. Some buildings nearby, like the Courtyard Marriott hotel, lost power. The hotel told guests there would be no cable. “Tomorrow is going to be a fun one,” Carnevale said. “Hopefully it opens back up. We’ll see, I’m not counting on it.”Police said traffic throughout East Boston and around Logan International Airport was impacted by the crash. Motorists are urged to seek alternative routes.
