Schisler joins Gallery One partnership | Arts & Entertainment
John Schisler’s ‘Blue Serenity’ demonstrates the artist’s use of techniques and materials used by the Dutch masters.
Gallery One announced this week that nationally recognized “local” artist John Schisler has joined the gallery partnership, located in Ocean View.
Schisler’s style is described as classical/contemporary realism. His artistic education began at the age of 17, at the Conrad Miller Studio in Fells Point, Md., where he studied the techniques of the Dutch masters, utilizing Maroger medium. Schisler was taught by artists Nancy Lee Conrad and Melvin Miller, who were both students of French painter and scholar Jacques Maroger (1884-1962), painter and former curator of the Louvre, and the inventor of Maroger medium.
Artist John Schisler has joined the partner artists at Gallery One.
He learned to make and use “black oil,” which is the basis for the mediums of such masters as Titian, Rubens and Rembrandt. The advantage of the medium is its ability to obtain the qualities of color, shadow and brilliance found only in the paintings of the masters, representatives described. Keeping with this tradition, he makes the black oil that is then used to make the medium, as well as his oil paint, by mixing it with powdered pigments.
Since 2011, Schisler has been pursuing a full-time career in art, winning local and national awards, and participating nationally in gallery and professional society shows and competitions. In 2018, he began to expand his focus from exclusively still-life painting to plein air, reflecting his love of nature and the outdoors. In 2020, he was juried into Plein Air Easton, considered one of the most prestigious events in the country.
John Schisler has expanded into plein air painting, focused on depictions of outdoor scenes like this one.
His professional artistic memberships include Oil Painters of America, National Oil & Acrylic Painter’s Society (Signature Member) and the International Guild of Realism. He has been featured in many publications, including American Art Collector.
Schisler’s work can be seen at Gallery One, 32 Atlantic Avenue, Ocean View, which is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. The gallery can be reached by calling (302) 537-5055.
