Tracking flight delays and cancelations at Charlotte airport | May 17, 2025

Hundreds of flights were impacted in the afternoon and early evening.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Summer travel season is kicking off, but that also means flight delays and even cancelations at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
As of 10:30 p.m. Saturday evening, FlightAware has reported 450 total delays at the airport. 69 flights thus far have been canceled.
WCNC Charlotte has reached out to American Airlines, which has the most flights out of Charlotte Douglas, for more information about the delays and cancelations. American so far has the most delays at 177, while its wholly-owned subsidiary PSA Airlines has the most cancelations at 58.
Charlotte Douglas is also facing the most canceled originating flights so far at all U.S. airports with 28 canceled flights out of Charlotte, along with the most delayed originating flights at 256. Similarly, the airport is seeing the most canceled destination flights at 41 and the most delayed destination flights at 194.
Saturday’s travel issues at the airport come in the wake of severe weather elsewhere in the south and midwest regions of the United States on Friday. Storm systems left at least 23 people dead, many of them in Kentucky. It’s not immediately clear if the storms are tied to delays at Charlotte Douglas.
At the Charlotte Douglas Airport – some passengers told us they were met with long lines and packed gates.
“I was supposed to be on a flight yesterday leaving around 9:30. Basically they cancelled it last night so it got delayed almost all day,” said Jack Posey. “I’m here, though. I’m on the ground, I’m blessed. I have another flight out tonight, so I’m not too worried.”
Another traveler explained she had to drive to make it to her destination as a result of her flight delay.
“This has been happening a lot lately. I travel almost every two weeks, and almost all of my flights have been delayed,” Phierica Gardin shared.
Travelers are reminded to arrive early to the airport and to have appropriate identification for both domestic and international flights. Domestic travelers now need to have, at minimum, a REAL ID to board flights bound for destinations within the U.S.
Those who plan to drive and park their cars at the airport can check parking area availability online.
