Trump holding his first outdoor rally after surviving assassination attempt last month: Live updates
4 min readDonald Trump and JD Vance are holding a rally in Asheboro, North Carolina, ostensibly to talk about national security. It is the former president’s first outside rally since the attempt on his life on July 13.
In a new interview with comedian Theo Von, Trump asked several questions about cocaine as the podcaster discussed his personal drug use as tehy recorded at the former president’s country club in Bedminster, New Jersey.
Trump, who advises against the use of drugs and alcohol, described cocaine as “down and dirty” and asked whether it was “too much to handle”.
In other news, the former president has railed against the burning of the American flag by protesters, which took place in Chicago as the Democratic National Convention enters its third day. He reiterated his call for Congress to enact laws sentencing those who burn the flag to a year in jail.
Vance meanwhile, accused Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz of lying about his and his wife’s use of in vitro fertilization when conceiving their daughter. Walz implied they had but never stated it directly.
Gwen Walz then clarified that she went through an intrauterine insemination (IUI) fertility journey rather than IVF.

Trump gives apocalyptic view of US national security
Donald Trump’s supposed national security speech today in North Carolina has veered off course a few times (jobs, the Obamas, crime) but when on topic has been especially apocalyptic, with lots of fear-mongering about impending nuclear war, a Chinese invasion of Taiwan, a higher death toll than acknowledged in Ukraine, and generally the outbreak of the Third World War.
The former president has also spoken about the disastrous withdrawal of Afghanistan and again fails to understand how NATO works.

Trump claims he ‘happens to like and respect’ the Obamas — hours before they eviscerate him at DNC
The Republican nominee claimed he “respected” Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama, despite the fact that he has spent years bashing his predecessor and proliferating false claims about him, including questioning whether Obama was a US citizen, alleging he ordered the wiretapping of Trump Tower, and even claiming he founded ISIS.
But hours before Obama headlined the second night of the DNC, Trump offered rare praise for him.
