FAA’s Latest Airline Warning For Central And South American Tourist Destinations Frustrates U.S. Travelers
Following the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) flight advisory on possible military activities over Mexico, Central America, and parts of South America, the public quickly erupted in anger, blaming Trump-era policies, with travelers saying Trump is putting the civilians’ lives at risk again over its unlawful interventions.
According to the FAA’s notice, “a hazardous situation in the overwater areas above the Pacific Ocean” will possibly happen, and warned U.S. aviation operators to “exercise caution” when operating over parts of Mexico, Central, and South America, due to heightened military activities and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) or GPS interference.
For the FAA, it’s a safety bulletin, but the notice sparked public backlash, with critics calling it bureaucratic deflection and pointing fingers at other nations rather than owning their insensitive actions.
Travelers Blame Trump Over FAA’s Flight Advisory On Possible Military Actions Over Central And South America
As a caution to commercial carriers, the FAA’s notice became a political flashpoint when social media lit up with outrage over dangerous actions the Trump administration has been taking, risking the lives of American travelers.
On January 16, the FAA issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) warning all U.S. operators to be extra cautious when flying over Mexico, Central America, and parts of South America due to potential military actions. According to the notice, the flight advisory is effective Friday until March 17, 2026.
“U.S. operators are advised to exercise caution when operating in the overwater areas above the Pacific Ocean in the Central America flight information region (MHTG) due to military activities and GNSS interference. Potential risks exist for aircraft at all altitudes, including during overflight and the arrival and departure phases of flight,” reads the FAA notice.
Travelers are apparently furious, not merely over the flight advisory but over the overall geopolitical tensions the Trump administration has caused, especially after its recent military strikes in Venezuela, capturing the country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, killing more than 80 Venezuelan and Cuban soldiers.
Over on Facebook, one individual thinks that Trump is power-tripping, and said, “that muppet in the White House thinks he’s allowed to do whatever the heck he feels like now,” in response to a comment of another person who asked why there would be military activities in Central and South America.
Another individual cited racism and said it’s because “America hates brown people.” But one Facebook user said that “threats have been made to go after Mexico and Colombia, after Venezuela.” Others believe that this is just another cover-up to loosen the public’s attention from the release of Epstein files.
On Reddit, many Redditors are also outraged about the FAA’s aviation advisory. One person commented on the thread and wrote, “A communications disruption can mean only one thing: Invasion.”
Theories have also emerged on Reddit. One Redditor also commented and said, “GPS interference implies Electronic Warfare. Electronic Warfare implies the U.S. military carrying out radar suppression. Radar suppression implies the US is going to bomb somewhere that has working air defense capability. This feels like Trump’s going to bomb Mexico.”
Here’s What Others Say About The Recent FAA Flight Advisory
|
“So far, the military has been “just following orders. Yeah, they didn’t clap for Trump, but when he told them to commit war crimes, they obeyed. A lot of people have a lot to say, but no actions to back it up. Hope I’m wrong, though.” |
|
“This feels like Trump’s going to bomb Mexico. This would be beyond insane.” |
|
“He’s actually about to invade and annex Mexico, isn’t he?” |
|
“They should keep their nonsense in the north.” |
|
“This is just another distraction to avoid accountability.” |
|
“How many people have to die to hide the Epstein files?” |
Following the Venezuelan raid, Trump has also threatened Mexico and Colombia that they will face consequences if they don’t crack down on drug cartels. He also warned Cuba and said the country looks like it’s “ready to fall,” stating that the U.S. aims to dominate the hemisphere.
What The FAA’s Flight Advisory Means For U.S. And International Travelers
The FAA’s flight advisory isn’t about travel restrictions, U.S. airport closures, or canceled entry into the country, but rather about alerting U.S. carriers to take extra precautions due to potential military activities over Central and South America, Mexico, and the adjacent Pacific airspace.
However, it might affect some long-haul routes and how airlines would operate under this 60-day aviation advisory. Both Central and South America have a good number of visitors to the U.S., with Mexico among the country’s largest travel source markets, although international travel to the U.S. has significantly dropped after the first quarter of 2025 in the face of Trump’s rhetoric and restrictive policies.
According to data from the National Travel and Tourism Office (NTTO), the last quarter of 2025 saw a consistent drop in international arrivals. In September, the U.S. suffered a 7.7% decline in overseas arrivals, while October and November saw 3.1% and 3.5% decreases, respectively, compared to the same months in 2024.
Many industry observers fear that the FAA’s flight travel advisory might cause U.S. airlines to adjust flight paths, build extra time to avoid potentially risky airspace, or add more fuel stops, resulting in flight disruptions or longer travel times.
Ironically, many Americans urge international travelers not to come to the U.S., particularly for the FIFA World Cup, to avoid the absurd $40,000 price tag for the World Cup Final weekend in New Jersey. This comes after a White House official hinted that international travelers for FIFA may not be protected from immigration raids.
The FAA’s notice may appear precautionary for U.S. travelers, but this worries passengers amid the Trump administration’s political tensions with other countries.
